The Role
As Head of Design, you will lead and oversee the design function across the business, managing the design team to ensure projects are delivered to the highest standard of design, quality, and compliance. You will act as the key design lead internally and externally, driving innovation, best practice, and collaboration across departments
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and direction to the Design Managers & Coordinators ensuring consistent and high-quality design management across all projects.
- Develop and implement design strategies, systems, and standards aligned with company goals.
- Oversee the design process from concept to completion, ensuring compliance with client requirements, budgets, programme, regulations, and industry standards.
- Manage and allocate design resources across multiple projects to ensure appropriate support.
- Lead design meetings with internal teams, clients, consultants, and subcontractors.
- Review and approve key design deliverables, ensuring coordination between disciplines.
- Drive innovation and value engineering to improve design efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Act as the main point of contact for design issues and escalate risks when needed.
- Support pre-construction and business development teams with bid and tender submissions.
- Coach, mentor, and develop team members to build a high-performing, motivated team.
Who We’re Looking For
- Significant experience in a senior design management role within construction or a related sector.
- Proven track record of managing design teams, delivering complex projects.
- A degree in Architecture, Engineering or a related discipline.
- A strong understanding of design processes, building regulations, planning and compliance.
- Strong commercial awareness, leadership and people management skills.
- Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
- Solution focused and proactive, with the ability to work under pressure to deadlines.
