The Role
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Managing Estimator to lead our estimating function within the commercial team. This key role reports directly to the Commercial Director and is responsible for overseeing the preparation of competitive and accurate tenders while managing and mentoring a team of estimators. The role is based in one of our UK offices, with occasional site visits, for which all associated costs will be reimbursed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the estimating department, ensuring timely and precise tender submissions.
  • Review tender documentation, compile supplier and subcontractor enquiries, and prepare detailed take-offs.
  • Conduct thorough analysis of supply chain tender returns and finalise tender submissions using estimating software.
  • Develop strategic insights into bid procedures to enhance competitiveness and secure new projects.
  • Address post-tender queries, prepare budget costings, and support sales and commercial teams during bid presentations.
  • Attend and lead pre-tender meetings, contractor engagement sessions, and site visits.
  • Ensure internal quality assurance (QA) processes are followed, preparing comprehensive handover packs and facilitating pre-start meetings after contract awards.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to junior estimators, fostering professional development within the team.
  • Identify upcoming tender opportunities and collaborate with business development to drive growth.

Who We’re Looking For

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field with extensive experience in main contracting (preferred).
  • Proven leadership ability, with a track record of successfully managing an estimating team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and construction estimating software.
  • Strong analytical skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, with a high level of professional integrity.
  • Strategic mindset, focused on driving efficiency and continuous improvement within the estimating function.
